Requirements

• ClockworkMod Recovery installed on your phone. Check out our guide on how to flash ClockworkMod Recovery for the Nexus 4.

•  Download the SuperSU package with Busybox (SU_Busybox_Package.zip, 1.14 MB).

• A Windows PC

• Handset USB drivers (usb-driver.rar, 8.27 MB) installed on the PC.

• Enable USB debugging on your handset. From the Settings menu, go to About Phone and tap the Build Number 7 times until a message “You are now a developer!” appears. Go back to the Settings menu and you will now find Developer options. Tap it and enable USB Debugging.

• Disable antivirus, firewall, and other security software. Also, disable other software that access your phone. Such software can interfere with the procedure in this guide.

•  Android System Development Kit (SDK) installed and Android Debug Bridge (ADB) set up on your computer. Check out our guides on how to installed the Android SDK and how to set up and use ADB.

• Root files (Root_Files.zip, 995.5 kB)

• Insecure Boot Image (boot.img, md5sum: 87d9def0925632f0339ff2ed13e56543)

• Fastboot package (Fastboot.zip, 404.46 kB)

Backup all personal data on your phone to make sure you have a copy of your personal data (e.g., contacts, SMS, MMS, Internet settings, Wi-Fi passwords, and the like) in case the procedure in this guide erases such data.

Instructions
ClockworkMod Recovery Method

1. Copy the SuperSU package to your phone’s internal SD card.

1. Switch off your Nexus 4.

1. Boot your phone to ClockworkMod Recovery. To do this, press and hold down Volume Up, Volume Down, and the Power buttons until Fastboot boots. Using the Volume keys, highlight Recovery mode and tap the Power button to select it.

1. Select Install ZIP from SD card.

1. Select Choose ZIP from SD card and select the SU_Busybox_Package.zip file. Confirm the action on the next screen to root your phone.

1. Select Wipe cache partition and confirm the action on the next screen.

1. Go back and select Advanced. From there, select Wipe Dalvik Cache and confirm the action on the next screen.

1. Select Reboot system now to reboot your phone.

ADB and Insecure Boot Image Method
Extract the contents of Root_Files.zip and copy the insecure boot image file to the Fastboot folder.
Switch off your Nexus 4.
Reboot your Nexus 4 into Fastboot Mode. To do this, press and hold down Volume Down, Volume Up, and the Power buttons until the screen turns on.
Connect your Nexus 4 to your computer via USB Cable.
Open the a command prompt and navigate it to the Fastboot folder.
Type in the command fastboot devices. Your phone’s serial number will appear on the screen. If it doesn’t, make sure you have properly installed the USB drivers.
Type the command fastboot oem unlock to unlock the bootloader. A warning message should appear on your phone. Using the Volume keys, select Yes and tap the Power button to unlock the bootloader.
Type in the command fastboot boot boot.img.

• Note: The phone will reboot. Leave the command prompt open because it will be used in the next step.

• adb shell mount -o remount,rw /system

• adb push su /system/bin/

• adb push Superuser.apk /system/app/

• adb push busybox /system/xbin/

• adb shell

• chmod 06755 /system/bin/su

• chmod 0644 /system/app/Superuser.apk

• chmod 04755 /system/xbin/busybox

• cd /system/xbin

• busybox –install /system/xbin/

• exit

Make sure your device’s battery still has at least 70% power. You don’t want the device to shut down in the middle of the procedure.

Extract Fastboot.zip to your computer. You will get a folder named Fastboot.
